The best product in a given category. The terminology is likely borrowed from animal shows whereby a particular breed of dog would have multiple contenders to win a prize. Similar to the animal kingdom, technology also has categories: ERP, CRM, CMS, etc. When a tool is considered to be the best in that category, it is often called best of breed. When a company employs a best-of-breed philosophy, it means each technology category will often employ a different tool from a different provider; creating a complex and multi-vendor ecosystem of tooling to support. Best of breed is the opposite approach to “single vendor” enterprises who try purchase as much software from a single provider as possible.
