Unlike a source of truth system which is the official “owner” of a business object, such as a customer, a system of reference is intended to work with a (mostly) read-only copy of that business object. For example, an HR system may be the source of truth for employees, but an authentication system (system of reference) will need a copy of all employees to know who are official company members versus not.
